DR. P.K. GHOSH: INSTITUTION BUILDER AND A LEADER WHO MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Dr. Probir Kumar Ghosh, an eminent scientist and academic administrator from rural West Bengal, has made exceptional contributions to higher education, institution-building, and agricultural research. Spanning more than three decades of distinguished service in the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, and currently as Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati (A Central University), Santiniketan, he exemplifies the rare integration of scientific excellence with visionary academic leadership.
The academic year 2025–2026 has been a transformative period for Visva-Bharati under the stewardship of Vice-Chancellor, Dr. P.K. Ghosh. From the time of assuming office on March 19, 2025, Dr. Ghosh has spearheaded an era of administrative transparency and academic rigour. The university’s mission is now firmly aligned with the national vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, striking a perfect balance between Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s prophetic educational philosophy and the technological revolution of the twenty-first century.
As Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ghosh has ushered in a phase of dynamic institutional revitalization in synchrony with the educational philosophy of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and NEP 2020. He has strengthened the university’s core mandate by re-integrating Indian Knowledge Systems, NEP2020, agriculture, and rural reconstruction, into mainstream teaching, research, and extension. His emphasis on the use and promotion of Indian languages in higher education has advanced inclusive and context-sensitive learning.
Within a short period of time, he has significantly improved academic governance, transparency, and institutional performance, which will certainly lead to measurable progress in national rankings such as NAAC accreditation, National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and QS World University Rankings. His leadership has catalysed Mission Mode Recruitment and promotion of teaching and non-teaching staff, encouraged interdisciplinary programmes, and enhanced research output through the acquisition of greater research grants, the development of student-centric infrastructure (including a vibrant library network), and the fostering of meaningful industry, alumni and community partnerships. A notable contribution has been the embedding of education within community life and the adoption of 65 villages, where the university now actively engages in rural transformation through integrated interventions in agriculture, livelihoods, health, sanitation, education, and non-polluted environment and cultural development— effectively operationalizing Tagore’s vision of rural reconstruction.
Dr. Ghosh has also led several pioneering institution-building initiatives at Visva-Bharati. These include the establishment of a “Yoga Village”, the opening of an AYUSH hospital for community well-being, the development of model villages integrating traditional knowledge with modern practices, initiating heritage walks, and the conceptualization of the TWIN Museum to preserve and disseminate India’s cultural and intellectual heritage. His efforts at preserving 48 heritage buildings in the campus have further strengthened the preservation and continuity of the university as a UNESCO-recognized living world heritage institution. Under his leadership, the development of green and clean campus has embraced sustainability through green initiatives such as solar energy deployment, waste management systems, water conservation, drinking water treatment/purification plants, and the introduction of emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence & digitization, and the establishment of a Centre for Advanced Skill Development at Silpa-Sadana for academic and administrative efficiency. Equally important are his initiatives for greater international collaborations and up-gradation of the existing Pearson Memorial Hospital.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Ghosh’s contributions to institution-building within ICAR were equally transformative. As Director of premier institutes, including the ICAR-National Institute of Biotic Stress Management, Raipur, he established world-class infrastructure and developed a carbon-neutral, energy-efficient campus integrating renewable energy, organic farming, biopesticides, and sensor-based irrigation, earning ISO certification. He also initiated UG and PG programmes and created centres of excellence for advanced research and human resource development, significantly strengthening institutional capacity. As National Coordinator, ICAR- NAHEP (a World Bank-funded project on higher education), he developed Centres of Excellence in 16 agricultural universities that led to human resource development/capacity building for more than 3,000 students and faculties under exchange programmes.
His administrative vision consistently translated research into large-scale societal impact. Through major national programmes such as Farmer FIRST, DBT Biotech-KISAN, Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav, SCSP, TSP, and NEH initiatives, he enabled technology dissemination, capacity building, and livelihood enhancement for over 1.5 lakh farm families, particularly among smallholder and tribal communities. These efforts led to the creation of farmer producer groups, agro-processing centres, and rural enterprises, making institutions more responsive to societal needs.
As Director of the Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi, he advanced fodder security and livestock-based rural economies across 15 states through technology dissemination, 83 model village development, and community grassland initiatives. His leadership in participatory water management, especially the low-cost “Jalkund” rainwater harvesting model in North-East India, provided water security to over 62,000 people and enhanced farm incomes, demonstrating the power of science-led grassroots innovation.
Dr. Ghosh’s research contributions in climate-resilient agriculture, natural resource management, and carbon dynamics are globally recognized, with 173 publications, 24 books, and high citation impact (13432; h-index 55; i10-index 169), placing him among the top 2% of agricultural scientists worldwide consecutively for 4 years (2020 to 2023). A Fellow of three leading science academies (INSA, NASI, NAAS) and recipient of over 20 national/international awards, he has also contributed to national policy and international scientific leadership.
Dr. P.K. Ghosh’s career stands out for its profound impact on higher education reform, institution-building, and socially relevant research, alongside his lifelong contributions to agricultural science and rural development which has garnered praise from all quarters of the world. His transformative leadership at Visva-Bharati has set this university on the course toward achieving academic and administrative excellence.
