ANIMAL SCIENCE

About The Department

Overview
Prior to October 2016, Animal Science functioned as a constituent unit under the Department of ASEPAN (Agronomy, Soil Science, Agricultural Engineering, Plant Physiology & Animal Science). In a meeting of the Board of Studies (BOS), a proposal was approved to reorganize ASEPAN into five subject-wise independent departments. Consequently, four departments, including Animal Science, were formally established and made operational from 1st October 2016.

Objectives of the Department
The Department of Animal Science was established with the following objectives:
To conduct regular teaching programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.
To provide comprehensive knowledge on feeding and rearing of cattle.
To impart expertise in breeding, feeding, and management of various types of fowl.
To educate students on different systems of duck and quail rearing.

Academic Programmes
The department offers structured academic programmes leading to postgraduate (M.Sc.), and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Animal Science. In response to growing industry demand and academic relevance, a specialized course—M.Sc. in Animal Science (Poultry)—was introduced in the academic session 2016–17. This was a pioneering initiative, marking the first instance in West Bengal where a postgraduate programme in Poultry Science was launched.
It is worth noting that the Ph.D. programme in Animal Science has been in operation since 1977, reflecting the department’s long-standing commitment to advanced research and academic excellence in the field of animal sciences.
