About The Department
From inception during 1989, the department was known as Department of Crop Improvement, Horticulture and Agricultural Botany (CIHAB) comprising of three distinct disciplines viz. Genetics & Plant Breeding, Horticulture and Agricultural Botany. The Department of Horticulture and Post-Harvest Technology has been started functioning as an independent department after a split of the composite Department CIHAB in 2016 (Office Order Memo No.: Estab./E-I/AOH&IC/2016-17, dated 30.09.2016). The department is offering various courses of B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture, P. G. Programme in Horticulture and Ph.D. programme. It is noteworthy that the P. G. Programme in Horticulture was started from the academic session of 1997-98 under the composite department CIHAB. At present, M.Sc. (Ag.) in Horticulture and Ph. D. in Horticulture Degree is offered from this new Department of Horticulture and Post-Harvest Technology.

Farmers' Training Programme 2026
The Department of Horticulture and Post-Harvest Technology organized a Farmers’ Training Programme entitled “Planting and caring of Young Fruit Plants” at Nimbuni Village of Choupahari Jungle, Illambazar Block, Birbhum on 30th July, 2026 (Thursday). The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from farmers and farm women belonging to the scheduled tribe community from Nimbuni, Amkhoi, Daronda, Jambuni, Laxmipur, and Senkapur villages. Village coordinators, faculty members and students of the department also actively participated in the event. During the programme, the faculty members delivered informative lectures and conducted hands-on demonstrations on planting and caring for young fruit plants. To encourage the adoption of improved horticultural practices, saplings of various fruit plants along with training materials were distributed to each participating tribal woman. The training programme was conducted successfully and received an overwhelming response from the participants, who highly appreciated the practical demonstrations and the distribution of quality planting materials.
Invited Lecture 2026
The Department of Horticulture and Post-harvest Technology organised an Invited Lecture Programme on the topic “Natural Farming in Farmers’ Fields: Practices, Performance and Prospects” at the Horticulture Classroom, Department of Horticulture and Post-Harvest Technology, Palli-Siksha Bhavana, Visva-Bharati, Sriniketan, on 31.08.2026 (Monday) from 2:30 p.m. onwards. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Ranjit Chatterjee, Head, Department of Vegetable and Spice Crops, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV), Pundibari, Cooch Behar. The session was chaired by Prof. Buddhadeb Duary, HoD, Department of Agronomy, Palli-Siksha Bhavana, Sriniketan. The programme was conducted successfully and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, research scholars, and faculty members.
