| 29/06/2026 | The World in a Single Nest is a joint project between GES-2 House of Culture, the Rabindra Bhavana Museum at Visva-Bharati (a Central University) in West Bengal, and National Gallery of Modern Art. The exhibition offers a new perspective on one of the most significant figures in Indian culture: the poet, writer, composer, thinker, public figure, and artist, Rabindranath Tagore (1861—1941). Many of Tagore's ideas sound very modern. His views on such seemingly diverse phenomena as pedagogy and art education, internationalism, collective creativity, nature, and agriculture form a coherent philosophy. These themes became the leitmotifs of the exhibition 'The World in a Single Nest', and they are echoed in the works of contemporary artists from different countries. Engaging in dialogue with Tagore's philosophical and political reflections, these works show that he remains a highly relevant thinker even today. In this respect, together with 59 original paintings by Rabindranath Tagore works of artist faculties of Kala Bhavana and many of the artists who were ex-students of Kala Bhavana and invited artists from India and Russia also participated. The list of participating artists and art collectives include Abhishek Chakraborty, Ruma Chowdhury, Samit Das, Gaba, Sanchayan Ghosh, Sangeeta Maity, Liza Neklessa, Ivan Novikov, Raqs Media Collective, Ulyana Podkorytova, and The Otolith Group with Dr. Ranjani Ramachandran, Prasanta Sahu, among others. | 19/06/2026 | National Translation Workshop on “Vaishnava Padavali (Classical Bengali) into Classical Tamil” Inaugurated at Visva-Bharati Santiniketan, June 19, 2026 Founded by Nobel Laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and recognized as an Institution of National Importance, Visva-Bharati has continuously upheld the ideals of multilingual education, cultural dialogue, and national integration. The Institute of Languages, Literature and Culture (Bhasha Bhavana) of Visva-Bharati is one of the largest centres for language studies and research in Asia. At present, it comprises eighteen departments offering teaching and research in twenty-three Indian and foreign languages. The Department of Tamil has, for more than four decades, made significant contributions to the fields of Tamil language, literature, translation studies, and comparative literary research. With financial assistance from the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT), Chennai, the Department of Tamil successfully organized a National-Level Translation Workshop to translate Mahakavi Subramania Bharati’s Puthiya Aathichudi into forty Indian and foreign languages, as well as sixteen indigenous tribal languages of Tamil Nadu. The translated volumes produced through this initiative are expected to be published shortly. The Department is also currently implementing a major research project involving the translation of the Classical Tamil anthologies Ettuthokai and Pattuppattu into Classical Bengali. Continuing this rich tradition of research and translation, the Department of Bengali and the Department of Tamil, Visva-Bharati, in collaboration with the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT), are jointly organizing a National Translation Workshop on “Vaishnava Padavali (Classical Bengali) into Classical Tamil” from 19 June to 3 July 2026 at Santiniketan. The inaugural session of the workshop was presided over by the Registrar of Visva-Bharati. The chief guest for the occasion was Dr. D. Uma Devi, Professor, Department of Indian Languages and Literary Studies, University of Delhi. The programme was attended by the Principal of Bhasha Bhavana, faculty members from various departments, research scholars, students, and invited guests. The workshop has brought together linguists, literary scholars, translators, professors, and research scholars from different parts of India. One of the major objectives of the workshop is the translation of nearly 1,200 Vaishnava Padavali songs, a significant component of the Bengali Vaishnava devotional literary tradition, into Classical Tamil. By translating these devotional compositions from Classical Bengali into Classical Tamil, the workshop seeks to strengthen literary and cultural ties between the Tamil and Bengali traditions. It will also promote comparative studies in Bhakti literature and foster intellectual exchange among Indian languages. This unique initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the preservation and dissemination of India’s literary heritage while furthering the ideals of cultural harmony and national integration embodied in the vision of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.” The organizers believe that this historic translation endeavour, linking two great classical literary traditions of India, will deepen mutual understanding among Indian languages and enrich the nation's shared cultural heritage.. | |
