ABOUT DEPT. OF ZOOLOGY Siksha Bhavana (Faculty of Science) was incepted in 1972, although science teaching had begun as early as 1961. The BSc Honours course in Zoology was introduced in 1965 and MSc in 1968. The interdisciplinary course of Life Science in collaboration with the Department of Botany was initiated in 1976. At present, courses are offered in B.Sc Honours in Zoology, MSc in Zoology and PhD program. The excellent quality of research in this department is also known to other universities and institutes in India and abroad. The University Grants Commission, New Delhi has recognized the merit and achievements of this department and included it under the prestigious Special Assistance Programme at the level of DSA, COSIST and CAS. By virtue of its research and teaching excellence the department has also been able to obtain funds for infrastructural facilities from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India under the FIST programme in the very first year of the introduction of this scheme. Teachers of this department have regular academic exchange with reputed scientists of national and international institutes and universities. Two thrust areas of teaching and research have been identified under the CAS programme, namely, Environmental Biology and Fish Biology. This department is the first “Zoology Department” in the whole of North Eastern India to be associated with the honour of CAS. |
