Botany

The Department of Botany is one of the premier academic departments under Siksha Bhavana (Institute of Science). The department came into existence with an Undergraduate course in 1965, followed by Post graduate curriculum introduced in 1967. The department gradually grew in stature both in the field of teaching and research and earned reputation from the National & Internation academia & science fraternity. Presently research works are being carried out in various frontier areas of plant sciences including Microbiology, Mycology, Plant Pathology, Plant-microbe Interaction, Phycology, Plant Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Anatomy & Pharmacognosy, Pteridology, Angiosperm Taxonomy and Ecology. The teaching curricula of the department both at 4-Year Undergraduate (8 semesters) and 2-Year Postgraduate (4 semesters) levels have been updated following UGC guidelines with the latest NEP-2020 syllabus implemented at the UG level, and choice-based credit systems at the PG level. The Ph.D. Course (one semester) curricula has also been developed at per UGC guidelines. The current curricula in UG, PG, and Ph.D. Course work are also augmented with traditional & indigenous knowledge of plant science at per the guidline of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) mission of the UGC.

The department has received national recognition from various agencies of Government of India, namely, DST-FIST (Level-II) and UGC-SAP (DRS). In recent years, faculty members have also received extramural research fundings from various Govt. agencies viz., DBT, SERB, DST, ANRF, UGC, BSI, DST, Govt. of WB (WBDSTBT), CSIR, ICMR, and Tea Board. Our faculty members received several prestigious awards from International and National organizations in recognition of their works viz., Alexander Von Humboldt Research Fellowship, Max Planck Post-Doc Fellowship, Raman Post Doc Fellowship, Overseas postdoctoral fellowship, INSA Exchange Fellowship, DST-INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship, DBT Rsearch Associateship, Visiting Scientist in different countries.

Our students are also doing fantastic. They regularly qualify various National level tests (CSIR-NET, DBT NET, ICMR NET, GATE, JGEEBILS). Many of them are doing their Ph.D. from several premier rsearch organizations of our country like CDFD Hyderabad, NIPGR Delhi, NCCS Pune, Bose Institute Kolkata, IICB Kolkata, IISER Kolkata, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, NIT Rourkela, etc. Many Ph.D. students got prestigious postdoctoral positions after their Ph.D. at National & Internation research laboratories. Alumni of this Department in the last decade have got positions in prestigious Institutes (like IISc, Bangalore, NIPGR, JNU), Universities, Colleges, and different government positions. Recently, doctorate students, based on the research work performed in the Department have ventured into Entrepreneurship.
