Visva-Bharati Cheena-Bhavana (Department of Chinese Language and Culture), the oldest department of Chinese studies in this sub-continent was established by Gurudeva Rabindranath Tagore and Prof. Tan Yun-Shan on 14th April 1937 with great ideas of strengthening the age-old culture relation and interfaces between India and China through personal contacts and investigations into the
history of interrelationship between the two countries. The aims and objectives of the Cheena-Bhavana were spelt out as follows:
In recent years Cheena Bhavana has established MOU with Yunnan University, Yunnnna Minzu University, Prking University of China. Under these MOU’s there has been a fruitful exchange of teachers, scholars and students which help in enhancing the educational and cultural understanding between India and China. Besides these, in the last five years many students have been employed as Chinese linguists and translators in government organizations and in many transnational companies.
International Conference “Marking the End of the Centenary Celebration of Rabindranath Tagore’s Visit to China in 1924” will be organised by the Cheena Bhavana, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan during April 1-2, 2025.
