About The Department

In the year 1939 the Govt of Odisha felicitated Rabindranath Tagore and the king of Puri Ramachandra Deva had honoured Rabindranath Tagore with the title ‘Paramguru’. He accepted the proposal made by the Odisha Govt to establish a Department for the study of Odia language, literature and culture in Visva Bharati .The Department of Odia, Visva- Bharati was conceived in 1947 and was established as a regular Post Graduate department in 1951 . This is the only Post- Graduate Department and learning center of Odia language and literature in the country outside Odisha . This department offers special papers on Folk literature, Comparative literature and Linguistics and Stylistics as a part of it’s post graduate courses. Since it’s inception the department has been maintaining a high standard in research and teaching activities.

National Seminar: Satire and Humour in Odia Literature : (22.01. 2024)

A national seminar on the topic ‘Satire and Humour in Odia Literature’ was organized by the department on 22-01, 2024 in Collaboration with Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. Inauguration was held in ICT Hall of Bhasha Bhavana.. Prof. Babrubahana Mohapatra was presented the Key Note Address. Kshetrabasi Nayak, Chinmaya Hotta, Radhu Mishra, Debasish Mohapatra, Dr. Pramila Patulia, Dr. Sarat Kr. Jena, Dr. Rabindra Kumar Das, Dr. Indramani Sahoo, Dr. Swapnarani Singh was presented the Paper. Dr. Sarat Kumar Jena Delivered the Vote of Thanks.

National Seminar: Language, Literature and Culture: A Discourse: (07.03. 2024 to 08.03.2024)

A Two Days International seminar on the topic ‘Language, Literature and Culture: A Discourse’ was organized by the department during 07.03. 2024 to 08.03.2024 in Collaboration with The Department of Culture, Government of Odisha.. Inauguration was held in ICT Hall of Bhasha Bhavana.. Prof. Sanjay Kumar Mallick, Vice Chancellor of Visva-bharati Inaugurated the lamp of Inauguration. Sri Dillip Balabantray, Secretary of Culture Department, Government of Odisha was joined as a chief guest and Prof. Sabita Pradhan, Vice Chancellor of Odia University Satyabadi, Odisha was joined as a chief Speaker. Dr. Sarat Kumar Jena Delivered the Vote of Thanks.In this Two days Seminar, Prof. Basanta Kumar Panda, Prof. Krushna Chandra Pradhan, Prof. Santosh Kumar Tripathy, Dr. Gouranga Charan Das, Dr. Girish Chandra Mishra, Sri Asit Mohanty was presided the various session. Twenty above papers presented in this Seminar.

Seven Days National Workshop On “Research Methodology in Language and Literature” (3rd to 9th December 2024)

Seven days National Workshop on ‘Research Methodology in Language and Literature’ coordinated by Dr Sarat Kumar Jena and organized by the Department of Odia from 3rd to 9th December 2024 becomes very important in disseminating the recent trends in the area of research methodology. Dr. Sarat Kumar Jena welcomed the guests and participants. Prof. Binoy Kumar Saren(Vice Chancellor, Visva_Bharati, Santiniketan) graciously agreed to be present and inaugurate the Research methodology workshop. Prof. Binoy Kumar Saren also emphasized the necessity of organizing a research methodology workshop to improve the quality of research and education at Visva-Bharati and in our country. The Inaugural session was presided over by Prof. Manoranjan Pradhan, Chairperson of the Workshop. (Principal, Bhasha Bhavana, Visva-Bharati). Prof. Sabita Pradhan(Vice Chancellor, Odia University, Satyabadi, Puri) graced the inaugural program as chief guest. Prof. Prakash Chandra Pattanayak (Rtd. Professor, MIL&LS, Delhi University) delivered the keynote address as chief speaker. The session was moderated by Dr. Swapnarani Singh. After the inaugural program Prof. Prakash Chandra Patttanaik(Senior Professor (Rtd), MIL&LS, Delhi University) And Dr. Nimai Chandra Saha (Librarian, Central Library Visva-Bharati) take 2 classes. Prof. Mukteshwar Nath Tiwari, Dr. Harekrushna Mishra, Dr. Rabindra Kumar Das, Dr. M. P. Terence Samuel, Dr. Jnanee Debasish Mishra, DrUsham Rojio, Dr Mayank Bhargaw, Dr. Sipoy Sarveswar, Prof. Fakir Mohan Nahak, Dr Prashant Meshram, Dr Ramesh Kumar Mallick, Dr. Indramani Sahoo, Sri Ajay Kumar Sharma, Dr. Arindom Chakraborty, Dr. Murugesan, Dr Biswajit Ray and  Dr Tappu Biswas take classes in this workshop.

The workshop was concluded by the Valedictory programme presided by Prof. Manoranjan Pradhan, Chairperson of the Workshop (Principal, Bhasha Bhavana, Visva-Bharati). Dr Prashant Meshram (Joint Registrar, Visva-Bharati) graced the occasion as Chief Guest of the Valedictory program. Prof. Sirajul Islam (Principal of Vidya Bhavana, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan) delivered the Valedictory Address as Chief Speaker. Vote of Thanks and final remarks were offered by Dr. Sarat Kumar Jena. Total of 65 participants from more than 16 different universities and institutions across the country joined both online and offline and actively participated in the workshop with their queries and suggestions. A total of 21 sessions (including inaugural and Valedictory) have been carefully chosen to make this research methodology workshop inter and multi-disciplinary, enabling the participants to gain newer insights into research. The seven-day national workshop on ‘Research Methodology in Language and Literature’ is equivalent to a short-term refresher course/Faculty Development program for Faculty and for research scholars as mandated by UGC.
