About The Department

The Department of Physics, Visva-Bharati was established in 1963 with a provision of teaching at the B. Sc. (Honours) level while the M. Sc. programme started in 1968. The department has been actively involved in the curricular development at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The “Computer Applications” courses are part of both the UG and PG syllabi since 1987. Initially the Department excelled in research activity in theoretical Physics as well as developed high level experimental research facility in early 1970’s. Some basic instrumentation & state of art facilities were developed gradually through individual research projects of the faculty members and DST-FIST programme. The Department houses a very high power computation facility procured through DST-FIST funding. A remote laboratory has been under development over the last one year to enable the students to perform experiments from their home. The faculty members regularly visit academic institutes within the country as well as internationally famous institutes like Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics (Garching, Germany), Naresuan University (Thailand), Fukushima University (Japan), Osaka University (Japan), University of La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina), International Islamic University of Malaysia (Kualalampur, Malaysia), Nicolaus opernicus University (Poland), University of Silesia (Poland), University of Yogyakarta (Indonesia), Virginia Commonwealth University (USA) etc.
