CENTRE FOR MODERN EUROPEAN LANGUAGES, LITERATURES AND CULTURE STUDIES (CMELLCS)

About The Department

Centre for Modern European Languages, Literatures and Culture Studies (CMELLCS) was created in 2014 keeping in mind Rabindranath Tagore’s vision: Yatra Visvam Bhavatyekanidam. The aim of CMELLCS is to promote an understanding of European civilization and its diverse impact on the world through the study of its languages, literatures and cultures, and through translation. The four modern European languages currently offered for study under CMELLCS are French, German, Italian and Russian. From 2014 to 2017, CMELLCS was a part of Department of English & Other Modern European Languages. In 2017 CMELLCS was separated from the Department of English. CMELLCS introduced two new programmes: BA (Hons.) in French, German, Italian and Russian in 2014 and MA in these languages in 2017. CBCS system has been implemented in all UG programmes since 2017. The Four year Undergraduate Programme under NEP 2020 in French, German, Italian and Russian was introduce in 2023. The last CBCS undergraduate batches graduated in 2025. Scholars from France, Germany, Italy & Russia as well as other European countries regularly visit CMELLCS for various scholarly pursuits. CMELLCS maintains close academic ties with Indian and foreign universities and institutions. At present, the number of sanctioned posts is 12, out of which 4 positions are filled. Guest Teachers are engaged against vacant positions as and when required and approved.
