The Department of History started its journey in 1961, on the Birth Centenary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Famous historians, such as Ashin Dasgupta,have taught in this department over the decades— a tradition that continues to this day. Currently, the Department is the recipient of the UGC SAP-DRS Phase-III. International and national conferences are held regularly and eminent historians are invited to teach and deliver lectures at the department.Further, we boast a list of illustrious alumni spread across the world.

The Department of History, Vidya Bhavana, Visva-Bharati organised a Two Day National Conference on “Biography as History” on 05-06 March, 2025 at Lipika Auditorium and Bhasha-Vidya Building Complex.
