Department of Painting, Kala Bhavana was initiated by Sri Nandalal Bose as an alternative centre of Modern art practice in India under the leadership of Nobel Laureate, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in 1919. Since then, under the guidance of modern masters like Sri. Asit Haldar, Sri. Suren Kar, Sri. Binode Behari Mukherjee, Sri. Radhacharan Bagchi, Prof. Dinkar Kaushik, and, in recent times, under Prof Emeritus, Prof. K. G. Subramanyan, Prof. Suhas Roy, Prof. Jogen Choudhury, it has maintained a pedagogic practice that is based on a close contact with tradition and contemporary art. The Department has explored a contextual approach in its curriculum, keeping close contact with art practice in India and Asia in particular and global art practice in general, towards a critical interdisciplinary approach. The department has two main areas of practice, studio-based contemporary art and mural art, together with new media and digital applications. In the last five years, artist experts from Australia, Poland, Holland, Russia, Puerto Rico, Thailand,
Sweden, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, Japan, Bangladesh, and the USA have visited the department and shared their experiences with the students and faculty members through workshops.
