About The Department

Department of Painting, Kala Bhavana was initiated by Sri Nandalal Bose as an alternative centre of Modern art practice in India under the leadership of Nobel Laureate, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in 1919. Since then, under the guidance of modern masters like Sri. Asit Haldar, Sri. Suren Kar, Sri. Binode Behari Mukherjee, Sri. Radhacharan Bagchi, Prof. Dinkar Kaushik, and, in recent times, under Prof Emeritus, Prof. K. G. Subramanyan, Prof. Suhas Roy, Prof. Jogen Choudhury, it has maintained a pedagogic practice that is based on a close contact with tradition and contemporary art. The Department has explored a contextual approach in its curriculum, keeping close contact with art practice in India and Asia in particular and global art practice in general, towards a critical interdisciplinary approach. The department has two main areas of practice, studio-based contemporary art and mural art, together with new media and digital applications. In the last five years, artist experts from Australia, Poland, Holland, Russia, Puerto Rico, Thailand,
Sweden, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, Japan, Bangladesh, and the USA have visited the department and shared their experiences with the students and faculty members through workshops.

Upcoming Events

A Faculty Exchange Workshop and Exhibition by the visiting faculty members from the Department of Applied Arts Studies, Silpakorn University, Thailand is held from 16.09.2025 to 19.09.2025, organised by Kala Bhavana and hosted by the Department of Painting and other two departments. Mr. Netikorn Chinyo, Assistant Professor, Department of Painting, Silpakorn University, Thailand conducted a workshop with the students of the Department of Painting, Kala Bhavana.
A Tree Plantation Programme under the Green Awareness Initiative was organised by the Department of Painting, Kala Bhavana on 01.09.2025, coordinated by Dharitri Boro. Total seven saplings including mostly fruit bearing plants like Mango, Grapefruit, Starfruit, Lychi, Amla, along with flowering plants like Roktoraag (Cordia Sebestena) flower, Kamini flower have been planted in the campus of Kala Bhavana. The department has formed a Green Initiative Team with the faculty members and student representatives from each class to ensure a green and healthy environment.
A Departmental teachers- students’ cultural meet was organized by the students of the Department of Painting, Kala Bhavana on 11.09.2025. The meet was a students’ initiative encouraged by the department to strengthen the bond between teachers and students for a friendlier environment. Through a series of performances, interactive games, and shared meals, the event encouraged informal interactions, allowing teachers to see their students in a new light and students to appreciate the approachable, human side of their mentors.
The Department of Painting has organised a Poster making competition for the Visva- Bharati students on 15.08.2025 as a part of Anti- Ragging Week observed in the university. The Anti- Ragging Week was celebrated at the university from 12th to 18th August, in order to spread awareness about severe consequences of ragging with an aim to totally eradicate the harmful practice and foster a safe and inclusive environment. A good number of students participated in the poster making competition, coordinated by Prasanta Sahu and Rajarshi Biswas.
