Under the guidance of Acharya Nandalal Bose, Printmaking as a creative medium was introduced in the newly opened Kala Bhavana during the 1920s.Later, under the guidance of Prof. Somnath Hore, Graphic Art (Printmaking)became a separate department in 1968, offering specialisation courses at the Graduate and Post-Graduate levels.
It was one of the first departments in India where Lithography, Etching, Woodcut, and Linocut were taught as creative media exploring the possibilities of individual artistic expressions. Of late, along with conventional printmaking, the department has introduced the new age nontoxic printmaking process, Digital technology and photomechanical reproductive process in the curriculum. The department is actively involved with various other institutions in India and abroad. The students and teachers regularly exchange their works, ideas and research with these institutions in the form of exhibitions, students exchange, workshops, etc.
Both teachers and students work together and have a very work-friendly atmosphere where students from different parts of the world come to join the lively and vigorous art flow of this department.

Department of Graphic Art (Printmaking) organised the workshop on Book Art & Demonstration from 8th September to 12th September’2025. Venue: Department of Graphic Art (Printmaking), Kala-Bhavana.
Demonstration: The printmaking intaglio technique you are describing is Aquatint, which creates tonal areas resembling watercolour washes by dusting a metal plate with powdered rosin, heating it to fuse the grains, and then exposing it to acid through the resulting porous ground. The acid bites tiny, ink-holding cavities into the plate’s surface, and the duration of the acid bath controls the depth and darkness of the tones . The non-acidic bites(Copper Sulphate) around the rosin particles, creating a pitted surface that holds ink and produces areas of tone rather than the lines of traditional etching. It is often used in combination with etching to add shading and depth to an image.
